3 million people make their living from coffee in Rwanda; production is mainly arabica and accounts for 65% of exports. The coffee is grown between 1,300 and 1,750 metres. The soil is protected from the sun during the dry season by mulching; only ripe beans are hand-picked, in several passes. Processing is by the wet method, before sun-drying and manual sorting. This coffee is harvested in the west of the country, on the shores of Lake Kivu.
